Concrete Plans

The plans have changed a number of times, but they're pretty solid now. I've been granted a one month leave of absence from work, starting July 7th. I'll pick up my rental car on Thursday, July 6th, and away I go. I'm going to drive down through Idaho and Washington to Crater Lake National Park and then to Highway 101, which goes down the coast of Oregon. From there I'll hit Redwood National Park, go down through the Napa Valley to San Francisco. Then I'll hit Yosemite National Park for a few days and after that it'll be down to Death Valley. I'm not sure of the route yet, but I'm also going to hit the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Tetons, Mount Rushmore and many many others.

I'm debating whether or not to bring my bike. I've heard the riding around Moab is amazing, but I'm not sure if I'm going to have the time to do enough riding to make it worthwhile to bring it. I'm definitely going to be doing a lot of hiking and photography, and I also have to keep my half-marathon training going. I'm not looking forward to having to run when I'm in the south in the dead of summer, but I'll be in pretty good condition by the end of it. I am looking forward to being footloose and fancy-free for a month, no responsibilities at all. Woohoo!

I'm returning the car on August 7th, back to work on the 8th. The bad news is that I'm going to miss the folk fest, the good news is I don't have to miss the bike camp.
