Oh Canada!

It was a very wonderful Canada Day long weekend. Here are a few of the highlights, along with some photos.

Friday afternoon drinkin':
I met Dave and some of his friends on the patio at the Ship & Anchor on Friday afternoon. I got to meet a pile of Dave's friends and we took over a large portion of the patio. There was a brief downpour, but we toughed it out and kept on drinking. Around 9:00 we headed over to Molly Malone's patio to meet up with a bunch of my crew for the rest of the evening.

Wakeboarding:
Dave woke me up obscenely early on Saturday morning to head up to Glennifer Lake to do some wakeboarding. I was really nervous about trying it, as I thought it was going to be really difficult, but... as you can see from the video, I managed to pull it off! Yay! Also, check out the video of Dave's friend Rob pulling off some pretty amazing wakesurfing antics.

Meet the Nodwells:
After wakeboarding we headed to Sylvan Lake to start our visit with Dave's family. The grilling started right away, and it was pretty intense since there were 10 of them, but I think I handled it all fairly well. I think I hit it off with Granma, who is a very nice lady and quite the card shark (she handily whooped my ass playing gin.) I think that I passed Dave's Dad's political conversation. He's a Mensa member who has traveled the world, a little intimidating, but luckily we agree on most issues so I think that went okay. His mom is a sweetheart so that was easy. Uncle Howard owns an oil and gas exploration company so that was a piece of cake. I wasn't sure if I'd impress Aunt Mar, but I knew what to do when she asked me to put the hook on the axle of the trailer as we were putting the boat away, so I managed to improve my "keeper" status with that one. They were all very lovely people and they made me feel very welcome.

Waterskiing:
We went out waterskiing on Sunday night as the sun was setting. Everyone gave it a go, and I think I did alright. We could hear Erica screaming halfway across the lake, which was hilarious. Besides Erica, I was the only one who was wimpy enough to use two skis, the rest of them are all superstars. Dave's mom did her entire run on one ski and never got her hair wet... looks like I've got some catching-up to do.

Sunset:
The sunset on Sunday night was gorgeous.

Sleeping under the stars:
Dave and I went out to look at the stars on Sunday night and it was so nice out that we decided to bring the air mattress out and sleep on top of the boathouse. The weather was perfect for it, and it was so cozy. What a great feeling waking up in the morning with the sun shining on your face and a gentle breeze... delightful. Sorry, no pictures of that one.

Learning to windsurf:
Dave taught me how to windsurf yesterday, something I've always wanted to do. I was pretty nervous about it, figuring that my spaghetti arms wouldn't be strong enough to pull the sail up, or to hold it once it got up there. But, alas, it wasn't too bad! I managed to get up and moving a couple of times, but I still wasn't grasping the concept of stearing so I was heading out into the middle of the lake. Luckily I fell off before I got too far out so I was able to drag it back in.

Relaxing:
The best part was just hanging out and relaxing. I worked on my tan a bit, read my book (Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them), loafed in the hammock, roasted marshmallows, played cards, and drank a lot of Caesars (which Dave is a genius at making). All in all, very lovely.

It sounds like you had a blast on the weekend! And, it looks like you're on your way to becoming a pro wakeboarder. I had no idea that wake surfing existed. Obviously, some people have already perfected it and downing a beer at the same time...hilarious!
